  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 3/4 cup chopped dates
  • ½ cup banana
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon apple pie spice
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 cups beer


  1. Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl.
  2. Add the eggs, beating well after each addition. Stir in the nuts and dates. Sift the flour, salt, soda and spices together.
  3.  Fold in the flour alternately with the beer and banana, beginning and ending with the flour. Pour into a greased tin pan.
  4.  Bake in a preheated moderate oven 350 dg F, for 1 hour or until a fine skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Invert cake on to a wire rack and cool.
